WE DESERVE BETTER.
BETTER SCIENCE. BETTER INGREDIENTS. BETTER PRODUCTS.
Can we be honest? We’ve got a problem — we’re talking toxic products, bad science, and lack of representation.
In fact, 75% of skincare products marketed towards Black women are considered toxic. Currently, all skincare products are made to treat skin that has a pH of 5.5. That may be the average pH for white skin, but it’s NOT the pH of Black skin.
On top of that, only a small handful of brands, 5% or less, carried in national beauty retailers are Black-owned.

It’s time for a wake-up call — toxic ingredients are widely used in Black skincare.
That’s why we are cautious about creating products with any of the ingredients on The X List, a list of 10 commonly used ingredients that have shown potential to cause more harm than good when used on skin of color.
The only warning label here is that this information may change your life. And whether you use our products or not, we hope you adopt this philosophy, share it, and support our effort to raise the standard in the Black skincare industry.
Hydroquinone - Can cause rebound hyperpigmentation and is often abused in pursuit of European beauty standards.
Chemical sunscreen filters - These are hormone disruptors and can cause allergic reactions in 25% of people. We think that’s 25% too many.
Fragrance - Can sensitize the skin and often masks phthalates which are hormone disruptors — we want to disrupt acne, not our hormones.
Fragrant essential oils - Can sensitize the skin and cause fungal acne — no thanks, next, please. We only use essential oils when they serve a proven purpose and offer little to no risk of irritation.
Artificial dyes & colorants - May increase the risk of irritation, blocked pores, breakouts, and sensitivity.
Drying alcohols - Can strip your skin and harm your skin's barrier. It can also dilate the pores of the skin, leading to blackheads and acne, and oilier skin — likely what you’re trying to avoid!
Silicones - Can act as a 'barrier' and trap oil, dirt, and dead skin cells, making acne worse. It can also cause pores to enlarge, and encourage blackheads and acne to form.
SLS - Can lead to dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, skin rashes, and hormonal disruptions. For people with sensitive skin, sulfates may also clog pores and cause acne. Frankly, we’d rather do without.
Parabens - Can cause skin irritation, disrupt hormones in the body and harm fertility and reproductive organs, affect birth outcomes, and increase the risk of cancer according to studies.
Phthalates - Have been linked to asthma, ADHD, breast cancer, obesity and type II diabetes, low IQ, neurodevelopmental issues, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorders, altered reproductive development, and male fertility issues, oh my.
